Waste and Recycling

If you're not sure of your collection day, call the Village at 630.434.5500

1. Trash, recycling and yard waste/organics are collected on the same day.
2. Items must be at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on your scheduled collection day, but no earlier than 12:00 noon the day before.
3. Carts must be removed from the curb by 12:00 midnight on the day of collection.

Recycling is included in the program at no additional charge.

Accepted Items

1. Newspapers
2. Mixed paper: advertisements, junk mail, office paper, gift wrap, paper bags, stationery envelopes, paper bags
3. Magazines, catalogs
4. Paperback books (no hard covers)
5. Chipboard such as gift boxes, tissue boxes, and food boxes
6. Cardboard
7. Glass bottles and jars (clear, brown, green)
8. Aluminum, tin, or steel cans, including empty aerosol cans and paint cans
9. Plastic containers coded #1 through #7 (except #6)
10. Plastic 6 and 12-pack rings
11. Milk cartons, juice cartons, and juice boxes

Not Accepted

1. Polystyrene foam materials such as drinking cups, plates, and egg cartons
2. Packing peanuts and foam packing blocks
3. Shredded paper
4. Mirrors, window glass, Pyrex glass or dinnerware
5. Cardboard soiled with grease or other food residue
6. Pots and Pans
7. Gas cans or other items containing hazardous chemicals

Carts are available from Republic as an option, or residents may use brown paper yard waste bags. Both options are included in the program at no additional charge.

Bags are not to exceed 50 pounds in weight.

Large branches that do not fit into the cart/bag can be bundled with string or jute twine. Bundles may not exceed 2 feet in diameter, 4 feet in length, and 50 pounds in weight.

Yard waste collection begins April 1st through the second full week of December.

Customers with a Republic cart can also opt-in for year-round collection. (Winter service occurs every-other week, starting December 21, 2026, through March 19, 2027.)

FOOD SCRAPS may be mixed with yard waste.

Accepted Items

Food Scraps: Fruits and vegetables, eggs/shells, coffee grounds, bread, cereal, rice, pasta, meat, bones, shellfish and seafood.

Yard Waste: Leaves, tree and brush trimmings, grass clippings, flowers, houseplants.

Not Accepted

1. Please, no liquids.
2. Pet waste

Seniors aged 65 years and older must be the primary resident at the address (either owner or renter).

Accepted forms of ID include a valid state issued driver's license or ID, or United States passport.

2. Visit the Finance window at the Civic Center, 850 Curtiss Street, Downers Grove, IL. Be prepared to show ID.

Senior Cost Per Month

Pricing effective April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027.

1. 35 gallon : $10/month
2. 65 gallon : $13.65/month
3. 95 gallon : $18.20/month

Pricing includes recycling and organics/yard waste collection at no additional charge.

Customers are allowed to dispose of two bulk items and/or white goods per week. Each additional item beyond the weekly allowance must have a sticker attached.

Items that do not fit in your cart such as small amounts of construction debris and rolls of carpeting, must be securely tied in bundles, limited to 50 pounds in weight.

Bundles are limited in size to 5 feet in length and 3 feet in diameter.

Customers are allowed to dispose of two white goods and/or bulk items per week.

Each additional white good beyond the weekly allowance must have 9 stickers attached.

Stickers are required for:

1. Additional items that do not fit into the cart.
2. Additional bulk items or white goods outside of the two weekly allowances.

Beginning April 1, 2026, stickers will be priced at $3.50 each.

2. Residents are able to create an online account and access bill payment services once they have an open Republic account.

The following holidays are observed by Republic Services:

1. New Year's Day
2. Memorial Day
3. Independence Day (July 4)
4. Labor Day
5. Thanksgiving Day
6. Christmas Day

When one of these holidays falls on a collection day (M-F) or Sunday when the legal holiday falls on a Monday, collection is delayed by one day.

Christmas trees are collected the first two full weeks of January.

1. Trees must be free of all lights, decorations and tinsel.
2. Trees cannot be in plastic bags or wrapped in plastic.
3. Collection applies to trees only; live wreaths or garland must be included in regular garbage.
