Waste and Recycling
All single-family homes and some small, multi-family buildings in the Village. The program does not apply to unincorporated properties or larger multi-family buildings.
No, the new program requires that all incorporated Downers Grove residents in single family and some small multi-family households sign up for cart service through Republic. The due date to sign up is February 14, 2026.
Unused or unneeded stickers can be returned in person at the Civic Center (Finance window) for a refund.
After April 1, 2026, cans and bins including the green Village of Downers Grove bins (see photo) can be put out as bulk items with no sticker required. It is recommended that you visibly label the container Dispose of Bin/Can.
The Village is working with Republic Services to explore options that would allow for recycling of these containers and will update this page with additional information, when it is available.
Republic Services charges for three months of service each quarter. You can expect your first bill in early April. Once you receive the bill, you'll be able to set up an online account that allows you to make payments online and set up paperless billing.
Food Scraps: Fruits and vegetables, eggs/shells, coffee grounds, bread, cereal, rice, pasta, meat, bones, shellfish and seafood.
Yard Waste: Leaves, tree and brush trimmings, grass clippings, flowers, houseplants.
