Fire Department


The Downers Grove Fire Department works around the clock to keep our community safe. From responding to emergencies to preventing fires and teaching safety, the department provides a wide range of services.

Emergency Response

  1. Respond 24 hours a day to fires, medical calls, and rescues.
  2. Coordinate with other agencies during emergencies.
  3. Handle hazardous materials incidents and domestic terrorism threats.
  4. Perform specialized rescues, including high-angle, trench, structural collapse, and confined space situations.

Fire Prevention and Inspections

  1. Conduct regular inspections of commercial, institutional, and multi-family buildings.
  2. Review building plans, occupancy approvals, and fire protection systems with the Community Development Department.
  3. Investigate fires and arson to protect the community.
  4. Conduct evacuation drills to prepare residents and facilities for emergencies.

Public Education and Outreach

  1. Deliver fire and life safety programs for students, businesses, civic groups, and senior residents.
  2. Conduct facility and high-rise evacuation drills.
  3. Many programs have earned national recognition and serve as models for other fire departments.

Staff liaisons work with the following Boards and Commissions to provide planning expertise and recommendations to the Village Council. 

  1. Board of Fire and Police Commissioners
  2. Fire Pension Board
  3. Foreign Fire Insurance Tax Board

Lockboxes

Lockboxes securely store keys so firefighters can quickly access homes and businesses during emergencies. This reduces property damage, keeps occupants safe, and helps crews respond more efficiently.

When prompted for department, search for Downers Grove Fire Department.

  1. BUSINESSES: Be sure to consider how many keys are needed to get to your fire alarm panel when choosing a lock box.

Installation

The Fire Prevention Division can help answer any questions about installation. Once complete, please call us at 630‑434‑5983 to place your keys and secure the lockbox.

Open Burning

As defined under the Open Burning ordinance, recreational campfires are allowed in Downers Grove, with certain provisions. Leaf burning is prohibited.

Public Safety educators at Night at the Firehouse

Several safety programs are offered in our schools or can be presented to the public in group settings. Programs can be tailored for different age groups.
