Public Works Traffic Division

The Traffic Division maintains the Village’s street system and traffic control devices. This includes maintaining parking meters and the parking deck pay units, and developing programs to address traffic safety issues.

Traffic Signals and Signs

The Village oversees:

  • Over 300,000 lineal feet of pavement markings to direct traffic.
  • Traffic signals at 20 intersections in Downers Grove. (All other signals are maintained by the Illinois Department of Transportation aka IDOT or DuPage County.) See MAP for locations and jurisdiction.
  • More than 15,000 signs and signposts on Village streets.

All signs are posted and maintained in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the source of all U.S. standards for roadway signs.

Please report damaged signs or malfunctioning signals to the Village by submitting a SERVICE REQUEST.

Requests for Safety Improvements

Residents who would like the Village to consider vehicular and pedestrian safety improvements in their neighborhood are encouraged to contact the Transportation Manager.

Traffic safety improvements are guided by the Traffic Calming Policy.

Neighborhood Traffic Study Program

The Village is committed to making safety improvements across residential neighborhoods.

Neighborhood traffic studies are conducted to evaluate how vehicles, pedestrians, and bikes operate in the area, identify safety and operational issues, and recommend solutions to improve traffic flow and safety.

Numerous safety improvements have been made as a result of the ten studies completed since 2011.
