Electric Vehicle (EV) Readiness

Downers Grove is becoming EV Ready! The Village is participating in the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus EV Readiness Program.

Participation in the program supports the goals of the Village’s Environmental Sustainability Plan, namely reducing vehicle emissions and working towards becoming a carbon neutral community. The Village is committed to sustainability and electrical vehicles are one strategy that achieves both of these goals.

EV Benefits

  1. Lower Emissions: EVs do not emit tailpipe emissions, which make them a cleaner option to operate compared to gasoline or diesel vehicles. See Downers Grove Emissions Summary | Chicago Metropolitan Planning Agency
  2. Less Pollution: Lower emissions lead to better local air quality.
  3. Reduced Maintenance Costs: EVs have been shown to have lower maintenance costs. They don't equire oil changes, tune-ups, cooling system flushes, and other common maintenance services needed for traditional vehicles.


Permit Information

The Illinois Electric Vehicle Charging Act requires new residential construction to be EV-ready and limits unreasonable restrictions on installing charging equipment, making it easier for residents to adopt electric vehicles over time.

If you are interested in installing an EV charger at your home or business, a permit is required by the Village. Installation must be completed by a contractor certified by the ICC.
