Bitter Cold and Dangerous Wind Chills Ahead

The National Weather Service is forecasting dangerously cold wind chills for our area over the next few days.

Bitterly cold conditions are expected this weekend, Saturday, December 13 through Sunday, December 14. The coldest period is forecast Saturday night into early Sunday morning, when dangerously low wind chills below 20 degrees below zero are possible. Residents should plan ahead, limit time outdoors, and take precautions to stay warm during this extreme cold.


WARMING CENTERS

Residents in need of shelter due to extreme cold can call 911 to request sheltering assistance. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Transportation to a warming center will be provided if needed.


The following warming centers are available, daily:

  1. Downers Grove Public Library, 1050 Curtiss St. 630.960.1200 Hours: M-F 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Sat, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Sun, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  2. Main Street Train Station, 5001 Main St. Open throughout the night.
  3. List of warming centers in DuPage County. Please be sure to call a warming center before going to one, as some are only open during emergencies, such as large-scale power outages.
