The Village of Downers Grove is proud to announce that the Downers Grove Civic Center landscaping has been certified by The Conservation Foundation.

The Conservation@Work program educates business owners and community leaders on the benefits of native landscaping, rainwater conservation, and responsible land stewardship. Through the program, participants learn how to manage invasive species, reduce chemical use and watering, and promote sustainable landscape maintenance. These practices not only help preserve and restore natural environments but also reduce maintenance costs, provide habitat for beneficial wildlife, and create more attractive, healthy outdoor spaces for employees and visitors alike.

Earlier this summer, representatives from The Conservation Foundation visited the Downers Grove Civic Center to review the site’s native plantings and sustainable landscaping practices. The Civic Center was certified in part due to its 64 different plant species and more than 6,500 individual plants located on the property.

Following the visit, The Conservation Foundation featured the Civic Center in its newsletter and website, writing:

“This high-profile public space is serving as a beautiful example to other municipalities, park districts, and residents of how incorporating native landscaping can increase visual appeal, provide habitat, save money, and improve the visitor and employee experience.”

The Village is honored to receive this recognition and remains committed to environmental sustainability practices that protect natural resources, enhance community spaces, and serve as a model for others.

Congratulations to Deputy Village Manager Mike Baker, Village Attorney Enza Petrarca, and Environmental Sustainability Coordinator Jason Michnick for leading this effort.
