Jefferson Roadway Reconstruction

Project Summary

This project involves full roadway reconstruction to replace the existing concrete pavement with hot-mix asphalt pavement on Jefferson Avenue from Plymouth Street to Dunham Road. Restoration will include sidewalk improvements, driveway apron replacement, and parkway sod installation.

Sod replacement work has been started. A final walkthrough will determine any remaining punch list items and cleanup work.

A punch list has been provided to the contractor and final sod inspection will identify any corrective landscaping work.

August 29, 2025

The construction work on Jefferson is substantially complete. The landscape contractor should continue to be on site for watering the new sod. Remaining work includes miscellaneous cleanup, landscaping, and punch list work.

August 22, 2025

Landscape restoration and site cleanup will continue the week of 8/25. Punchlist work may also begin next week and possibly again after the sod is installed to address any final corrective work.

August 15, 2025

1. The contractor is targeting Monday August 18 to complete the asphalt paving for all remaining driveways and roadway surface course. Notices will be distributed to ask residents to not park on Jefferson overnight Sunday August 17 as the tack coat will be applied first Monday morning.
2. Landscape restoration may begin the week of 8/18 as well, but this will be dependent on cooler temperatures.

August 1, 2025

1. Curb and gutter installation was completed on Jefferson last week, and asphalt paving for the base course is anticipated for the week of 8/4. Sidewalk installation will likely continue next week as well, with driveway apron construction to follow shortly after. Barricades will remain in place at driveway entrances until they are ready to drive on.
2. Some landscape preparation may also begin the week of 8/4, but installation of sod will likely need to wait until the forecasted temperatures are below 80.

July 25, 2025

1. Pavement removal will continue on Jefferson Avenue the week of 7/28. Excavation is also expected to begin for the 8 foot walkway on the south side of Jefferson Ave.
2. Curb and gutter installation may also begin the week of 7/28 (weather pending). During that time, residents will be without access to their driveways for several days. Notices will be distributed with alternate parking options to be utilized during that time.

July 11, 2025

1. The underground contractor is ahead of their initial schedule and is planning to complete utility work on Jefferson on Saturday 7/12. The next controlling item is for the paving contractor to start pavement removal operations on Jefferson on the week of 7/21.
2. Traffic control signs and barricades will remain up during the week of 7/14, but no work is anticipated at this time. Tree removals have been delayed again, but are still planned at four locations on this project. More information will be shared as it becomes available.

July 4, 2025

Tree removal was delayed again until the week of 7/7. Water service replacement and storm sewer work will also begin the week of 7/7. Water service interruption is only anticipated for the four homes with scheduled work.

June 27, 2025

Tree removal has been pushed back to Monday 6/30. Traffic control signs should be installed next week as well, with storm sewer and water service materials and equipment being delivered to the site. Underground utility work is tentatively scheduled to begin the week of 7/7.

June 20, 2025

1. The contractor is planning to begin mobilizing with traffic control and erosion control at the site beginning the week of 6/23, with tree removal scheduled for late next week. There are now no tree removals anticipated near Hillcrest School as an easement was approved allowing the new 8 foot concrete sidewalk to avoid trees in that area.
2. The underground work is tentatively scheduled to begin the following week (6/30 - 7/3), but driveway access will generally remain throughout the early stages of the project.

May 16, 2025

1. Thank you for providing comments regarding the proposed installation of the shared use path on the south side of Jefferson Avenue between Plymouth Street and Dunham Road.
2. This item will be discussed at the May 20, 2025 Council Meeting. The meeting begins at 7pm at the Downers Grove Civic Center, 850 Curtiss Street. You are welcomed and encouraged to attend this meeting.

April 25, 2025

1. This project is currently being advertised to contractors, with shared use path work on the south side of Jefferson listed as an "alternate" option.
2. Bids are due back from qualified contractors by May 7, which will then be reviewed at two additional council meetings to review all relevant information to determine how the work will proceed.

April 4, 2025

Final design is ongoing for the Jefferson Avenue roadway reconstruction. Alternatives are still being explored for sidewalk improvements.

March 14, 2025

1. A neighborhood meeting has been scheduled for 3/25/25 at 6 PM at the Public Works building located at 5101 Walnut Ave.
2. The project is anticipated to go out for bids in April with construction to begin after school is out for the summer.
