Downers Grove Plants 250 Parkway Trees in Honor of America 250

Featuring species such as American Hophornbeam, American Larch and American Beech, the newly planted trees serve as a fitting tribute to the nation's 250th anniversary, while strengthening Downers Grove's urban forest for future generations. Each tree will be mapped and incorporated into the Village's GIS-based tree inventory, helping staff track, maintain and protect these valuable community assets as they mature.

The commemorative planting effort reflects the Village's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship of its urban forest. Trees play a vital role in improving air quality, reducing stormwater runoff, providing shade, enhancing neighborhood character and supporting local wildlife.

"Planting 250 trees in recognition of America's 250th anniversary is a meaningful way to celebrate our nation's history while investing in the future of our community," said Mayor Bob Barnett. "These trees will serve as a living legacy that benefits residents today and for decades to come."

The initiative also supports the Village's broader sustainability goals and builds upon its long-standing commitment to maintaining a healthy and diverse urban forest. Downers Grove is home to more than 23,000 public trees representing more than 120 species and has earned Level Two Arboretum Accreditation through the international ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program.
