Avoid Volcano Mulch

A mulch "volcano" is a large pile of mulch that is often too deep, but also incorrectly piled against the stem or trunk of a tree. This technique can lead to disease and decay problems.

The Village, together with our partners at the Conservation Foundation, would like to remind everyone how to avoid volcanoes in your landscape.

• Check the existing depth of your mulch bed before adding to it.
• Do not add mulch if it is already 4 inches deep.
• Rake existing mulch back several inches to expose trunk base and refresh the appearance of the bed. 
• If mulching a large area, spread the mulch first, then pull it away from trunk with a rake or gloved hands.

Every day of the year, the Village has free wood chips available at a fenced site located on the north side of Curtiss St. at the intersection of Katrine Street. The site is open M-F. from dusk to dawn and Saturdays and Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Residents are welcome to take the amounts they need using their own transport.
