Linda Kunze Plaza

Project Summary

This project includes maintenance and upgrades to the Linda Kunze Plaza at the Main Street Train Station. The south side of the tracks will be constructed in 2026, and the north side is planned for construction in 2027.

The redesigned plaza will feature new landscaping, decorative paving, masonry seat walls, gateway signage, irrigation improvements, repairs to the existing clock and a new fountain feature that will serve as a focal point for the space. 

This project was identified in the 2025 Guiding DG Streetscapes Plan.

LATEST UPDATE

July 17, 2026

1. Removal of curb, sidewalk, and pavement in the first zone of work is complete.
2. The historic clock was too heavy to remove with the equipment available. A larger piece of equipment will be required and the schedule for the work will be updated here. The clock will be shipped out for repairs and reinstalled toward the end of the project.
3. Excavation for storm sewer replacement and seat wall foundations is underway and will continue into next week, weather pending.
4. Metra is in the process of replacing and updating some wiring for the platform while work is underway.

PAST UPDATES

July 10, 2026

1. Construction fence has been installed around the area of the first phase of work. Contractor has begun removing existing sidewalk, curb, and pavement near the drop off lane South of the train station.
2. Electrical and other utility work to follow next week after removals are complete.
3. The historic clock on Main Street will be removed next week to be sent out for repairs. The clock will be reinstalled as part of the plaza project.

July 3, 2026

Contractor to begin work the week of July 6th. The drop off lane South of the train station on Burlington will be inaccessible during the project.

June 19, 2026

This project was awarded at the June 16 Council meeting. A preconstruction meeting will take place the week of June 22, at which time a construction schedule will be established.

May 22, 2026

Bids were opened for this project on May 19. It is anticipated that this item will be presented to Council as a first reading at the June 9 meeting.

April 24, 2026

This project is being advertised for bidding. Bids are due on May 19th.

April 10, 2026

Proposed renderings were presented at the April 7th Council meeting.
