Downtown Crosswalks

Project Summary

Sidewalk ramps, traffic signals and connections will be modernized and updated to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

All existing sidewalk materials will be replaced with concrete matching the rest of the Downtown Business District (DBD).

All existing crosswalk material within each intersection will be replaced and topped with a highly visible and durable material in a decorative red brick pattern.

The following intersections will be improved:

  • Main St and Maple Ave
  • Main St and Curtiss St
  • Main St and Burlington Ave
  • Main St and Warren Ave
  • Main St and Franklin St

  • Traffic signal head and push button replacement and installation is completed.
  • Additional signal work, including uninterruptible power supply installation, fiber optic, and camera work is expected to continue into next week, weather pending.

September 22, 2023

September 15, 2023

  • Traffic signal head replacement and push button installation has begun at the intersection of Main and Maple. Work is expected to continue into next week, weather pending.
  • Traffic signal heads will be replaced and push buttons installed at Maple, Curtiss, Burlington, Warren and Franklin.


September 8, 2023

  • Asphalt and concrete work is complete at all locations. There will now be a thirty day waiting period before decorative crosswalk material can be applied.
  • Traffic signal work and updates are expected to take place over the next few weeks, weather pending. New pedestrian push button posts will be installed, push buttons will be updated to the current standard, and traffic signal heads will be replaced.


September 1, 2023

  • Asphalt crosswalk work is complete at all locations.
  • Concrete sidewalk work is expected to be complete at all locations next week, weather pending. There will now be a thirty day waiting period before decorative crosswalk material can be applied.

August 25, 2023

  • Concrete crosswalk removal and replacement is complete at all intersections.
  • Asphalt work at Maple, Burlington, Warren, and Franklin is expected to continue into next week, weather pending. After the remaining crossings have been ground and resurfaced, there will be a thirty day waiting period before decorative crosswalk material can be applied.


August 18, 2023

  • Concrete crosswalk removal and replacement is complete at Main and Curtiss.
  • The West halves of the crosswalks at Main and Burlington and Main and Warren will be replaced next week, weather pending. Asphalt work will continue into next week, including the removal and patching of existing crosswalks at Main and Maple, Warren, and Franklin.


August 11, 2023

  • Concrete crosswalk removal and replacement has begun at Main and Curtiss. The North halves of the Curtiss St crosswalks have been replaced. The West halves of the Main St crosswalks have been replaced.
  • Work is expected to continue into next week, weather pending, beginning with the South halves of the Curtiss crosswalks and followed by the East halves of the Main St crosswalks.
  • Concrete crosswalk replacement work at Main and Burlington and Main and Warren to follow. Traffic delays are expected while work is in progress.


August 4, 2023

  • Sidewalk work has been completed at the northeast and northwest corners of Main and Maple. A section of sidewalk on the southwest corner has not yet been poured due to a potential conflict with the building foundation.
  • Removal at the southeast corner of Main and Maple has begun. Sidewalk has been poured on the northwest corner at Main and Burlington and partially poured at the southwest corner.
  • Removal work and concrete work are expected to continue into next week, including the East side of Main and Burlington, weather pending.


July 28, 2023

  • Sidewalk work is complete at Main and Warren. Curb work is complete at Main and Curtiss and sidewalk work is expected to continue into next week, weather pending.
  • Removal work is expected to begin at Main and Maple next week. After work is completed at Main and Curtiss, work will begin at Main and Burlington.


July 21, 2023

  • Sidewalk work is complete at Main and Franklin southwest and Main and Warren southeast. Removal work at Main and Curtiss and Main and Franklin is expected to continue into next week.
  • Work outside the entrances of Pierce Tavern and My Special Toy Store will be phased to maintain access to both buildings. Temporary stone has been placed at the southwest corner of Curtiss and Main to help facilitate pedestrian traffic until the utility manhole is lowered by AT&T.


July 14, 2023

  • Push-button foundations have been poured at the West sides of Main and Franklin, Main and Warren, and Main and Curtiss. Concrete sidewalk and curb work at the West side of Main and Warren and Main and Curtiss NW is completed.
  • Main and Curtiss SW requires adjustment of a utility manhole by AT&T to be done over the next couple of weeks.
  • Removals, framing, and pouring at the West side of Main and Franklin are expected to continue next week, weather pending.


July 7, 2023

  • Portions of concrete sidewalk have been poured back at the intersection of Main and Curtiss and Main and Warren.
  • Sidewalk framing and pouring is expected to continue into next week, weather pending.
  • Pedestrian push-button foundations at Main and Franklin, Main and Warren, and Main and Curtiss are expected to be poured next week, weather pending.


June 30, 2023

Removal work has begun on the West side of the intersections of Main and Warren and Main and Curtiss. Removal and framing work is expected to continue into next week, weather pending. Work will be phased in order to maintain access to nearby businesses and facilitate pedestrian access.


June 23, 2023

Work is expected to begin Monday, June 26. The contractor plans to start at the northwest and southwest corners of Main and Curtiss as well as the northwest and southwest corners of Main and Warren. Concrete removals and pours will be phased to maintain access to nearby businesses and facilitate pedestrian traffic.
