Though a warm up is expected over the weekend, there's still some chilly temperatures in the forecast.

 * Please phone ahead to verify hours. 

  • Residents in need of emergency shelter due to extreme cold can call 911. Transportation to a warming center will be provided if needed. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays.  
  • Other warming centers are open on a daily basis. Check the DuPage County 211 site.
  • Please remember to check on the well being of friends and neighbors during severe weather conditions.

Signs of Cold Weather Exposure

Seek medical attention if you are displaying these signs after exposure to the cold

  • Uncontrollable shivering
  • Memory lapses
  • Slurred speech
  • Immobile or fumbling hands
  • Stumbling and apparent exhaustion; inability to get up after rest

Prevent Freezing Pipes

  • Turn faucets on and let water trickle to avoid freezing.
  • Open cabinet doors to allow room heat to circulate around pipes.
  • Keep pipes wrapped in insulation, if possible.
  • If a water pipe bursts, shut off the main water valve to the house.
  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
