The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and their partners in the DuPage Monarch Project, which includes the Village of Downers Grove, invite nature fans to join the Parks for Pollinators Bioblitz, Sept. 12 - 20, 2020. This event is part of a national campaign to raise public awareness of pollinators and takes place during the monarch's migration through the county. Everyone interested in taking part can do so while social distancing.
In May of 2018, the Village began cultivating a pollinator garden in the open areas near the Belmont underpass. The garden is blooming with purple cone flowers, black-eyed susans and narrow-leaved milkweed. Now hummingbirds, bees and monarchs make regular visits.
The BioBlitz will help to identify the pollinator species present in DuPage and the habitat they're visiting. Participants are asked to photograph pollinators they observe and load them to the free iNaturalist smart phone app.
The BioBlitz is part of Parks for Pollinators, a National Recreation and Parks Association Project, linking local DuPage conservation efforts with similar ones throughout the country.
