Village Responds To Fuel Leak

Update 3/25/2020 @ 3:30 p.m. - Work to clean up the diesel fuel spill may continue through the night. The fuel, which came from a ruptured tank on a commuter bus located in Westmont, seeped into St. Joseph Creek on Monday. The clean up is being done by Pace and an environmental remediation company. The Village continues to monitor the situation.  


On Tuesday, March 24, 2020, the Downers Grove Fire Department responded to a report of a sheen on the water in St. Joseph's Creek in the area of Brookbank Road and Gilbert Avenue. The material causing the sheen was identified as diesel fuel. The source of the sheen was a diesel fuel spill which took place in Westmont on the evening of Monday, March 23rd. Diesel fuel from the ruptured tank of a commuter bus located at the Westmont Rail Station leaked into the storm sewer system. 

Clean up efforts by PACE Bus and an environmental remediation company have been underway since yesterday afternoon. The Village will continue to monitor the situation.
