Area Police See Uptick in Car Thefts and Burglaries

Lock your car - even in your driveway. The Downers Grove Police Department has seen an increase in the number of car burglaries and car thefts in and around our community. Many of the burglaries occurred when vehicles were left unlocked in the owner's driveway. Car burglaries occur in both residential areas, as well as in public parking lots. Remember to always lock your vehicle upon exiting it - even when your vehicle is parked in your driveway. An unlocked vehicle is an easy target for a burglar, especially after dark. The quick entry and exit of a vehicle parked in the driveway with your valuables inside can easily go unnoticed . . . even if you are home.

Don't give a thief an opportunity to "window shop" in your car. Don't allow criminals to view valuables or packages inside your car when it is parked in your driveway or in public parking lots. It is as easy as placing valuables in the vehicle trunk or taking the items in the house. The incidents of car burglaries reported to police had items such as cell phones, laptops, purses, and wallets taken by the burglars. While burglars "prefer" to target unlocked vehicles, if there are valuables inside, they will not hesitate to break a window. The police department urges you to lock your vehicle at all times and put valuables in the trunk.

Lock your home at night - even when you are at home. In several car theft cases occurring in neighboring towns, the offender entered an unlocked home while the residents slept to locate the keys to the vehicle in the driveway that they wanted to steal. Always lock your doors anytime you leave your home and at night.
