Join the National 'Do Not Call' Registry

The Downers Grove Police Department recommends citizens join the National Do Not Call registry to reduce or stop unwanted sales calls. The Registry is open for all personal phone numbers and is a free service.

How do I register?

The process to register is simple and can be done on the phone by calling 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236); or online by visiting donotcall.gov. If you register online, you will receive a confirmation e-mail from donotcall.gov and you must click on the link to complete the registration process.

How long does it take?

Your phone number will be on the Registry the next day; most sales calls will stop once you have been on the Registry for 31 days.

If I register my number, will ALL unwanted calls stop?

No, the DoNotCall Registry prohibits sales calls. You may still receive calls such as political, charitable, debt collection, and telephone surveys. Businesses that you have done business with in the past are exempted from the DoNotCall Registry. You may ask them to stop calling and they must honor your request.

What can I do about "robocalls"?

Robocalls are made with Internet powered telephone systems. You answer the phone, and there is a delay before a person's voice speaks to you. The best thing to do is hang up immediately. Robocalls are illegal, so the call you received was a scammer. • You may consider having your phone service "block" a telephone number; there may be a charge for the service.

Where can I file a complaint about an illegal sales call or a robocall?

To report an illegal phone call you can visit donotcall.gov or call 1-888- 382-1222 (TTY: 1-866290-4236).
