Drive Smart and Safe for the Holiday
Last updated: Communications Director |
The Downers Grove Police Department and the National Safety Council want everyone to be safe on the road during this holiday season by taking note of these tips:
- Slow down - Speeding is a problem on the highway and on local roads.
Speeding reduces your reaction time and significantly increases the violence of an impact. Speeding is a factor in a third of the fatal traffic crashes. - Put Down the Cell Phone - Per the National Safety Council, 1.3 million crashes a year can be attributed to the cell phone. While the law in Illinois permits hands-free use of cell phones while driving, there is no truly safe way to drive while talking on a cell phone.
- Don't Drive While Impaired - Driving after consuming alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, or illegal drugs may be considered impaired driving and can have deadly consequences.
- Seat Belts Save Lives - Properly worn seat belts and utilizing child safety seats are your best protection against injury or death in a crash. Be sure that everyone is buckled up before your car moves.
