Drive Smart and Safe for the Holiday

The Downers Grove Police Department and the National Safety Council want everyone to be safe on the road during this holiday season by taking note of these tips:

  • Slow down - Speeding is a problem on the highway and on local roads.
Speeding reduces your reaction time and significantly increases the violence of an impact. Speeding is a factor in a third of the fatal traffic crashes.
  • Put Down the Cell Phone - Per the National Safety Council, 1.3 million crashes a year can be attributed to the cell phone. While the law in Illinois permits hands-free use of cell phones while driving, there is no truly safe way to drive while talking on a cell phone.
  • Don't Drive While Impaired - Driving after consuming alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, or illegal drugs may be considered impaired driving and can have deadly consequences.
  • Seat Belts Save Lives - Properly worn seat belts and utilizing child safety seats are your best protection against injury or death in a crash. Be sure that everyone is buckled up before your car moves.
