Village Moves To Invigorate Historic Preservation

The Village Council established the Architectural Design Review Board (ADRB) Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Historic Preservation at the July 21, 2015, meeting. Seven subcommittee members have been appointed to work with the existing ADRB members. The goal of the subcommittee is to increase the number of properties designated as landmarks and districts under the Historic Preservation Ordinance. Since the adoption of the ordinance in 2007, only two properties have sought and received landmark status; 5256 Carpenter St. (pictured above) and 4943 Highland Ave. (right)  

The Village has not received any applications to create a historic district.  

The ADRB and subcommittee will discuss and consider changes to the ordinance. Discussions will include the process for landmarking a structure or creating a Historic District, the regulations for new and existing structures in Historic Districts and for alterations to landmarked structures. Regulations for the demolition of landmarked structures or existing structures in Historic Districts will also be considered.

The ADRB and subcommittee will also discuss and consider ways to enhance public awareness and understanding of the ordinance, explore ways to assist property owners with the application process and consider incentives.  

Plans have been made for the ADRB and subcommittee to meet together twice a month from August through October. The group is charged with delivering any proposed ordinance changes or recommendations to the Village Council by October 31, 2015, to increase the number of landmarked properties or districts.

The public is encouraged to attend and participate in the ADRB and Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Historic Preservation meetings, which will be held on the following Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Public Works Facility, 5101 Walnut Avenue:
