Police Warn of Latest Phone Scam

In a recent incident, a resident reported to police that she received several phone calls with a 954 area code from a person identifying themselves as representing Microsoft technical support. The caller convinced the victim that her e-mail account and computer was compromised and required immediate attention to resolve to prevent further damage or security breaches. The victim subsequently realized that the call was a scam and contacted the police department to report the incident.

The Downers Grove Police Department wants our citizens to know that this type of scam is occurring frequently in and around our community. The scammer convinces the victim that they must take immediate action to prevent further security issues. Their goal is to obtain credit card information and passwords from the victim.

If someone calls or e-mails you claiming to be technical support for Microsoft:

  • Do not purchase any services from the caller.
  • Never provide control of your computer to any third party unless they are a reputable computer support team that you have contacted for assistance.
  • Report the incident to police.

The Downers Grove Police Department is here to assist you; you should not hesitate to call anytime you question whether a caller is legitimate. Contact the Crime Prevention Unit at (630) 434-5606, or call 9-1-1 for assistance.
