September 14 through September 20 is National Child Passenger Safety Week. The Downers Grove Police Department encourages all parents to make sure their child's safety seat is correctly installed in their car. Following are some of the statistics that demonstrate the danger children are in every time they get into a car.
- Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 through 13 years old.
- In motor vehicle crashes occurring during the 5-year period from 2008 to 2012, 3,390 children under the age of 13 were killed and 613,000 children were injured.
- In 2012, over one-third (37%) of children killed in car crashes were not in car seats, booster seats, or seat belts.
The Downers Grove Police Department provides assistance to residents installing child safety seats. Residents may contact Supervisor Tim Sembach at (630) 434-5636 to schedule an appointment with a certified child safety technician who will ensure that your child safety seat is installed correctly.
