July 4th Traffic Enforcement Campaign

The Downers Grove Police Department is participating in a year-long initiative that focuses on impaired driving and seat belt enforcement on specific holidays, including the July 4th holiday. Officers will be working saturation patrols that target impaired drivers and seat belt enforcement zones. While celebrating during July 4th weekend, please use caution when you are on the road.

The July 4th holiday period is one of the deadliest times for traffic crashes due to a rise in impaired driving. Last year during this period,540 people were killed in traffic crashes; in addition, there were 58,000 injuries associated with traffic crashes during the same time. Drinking and driving played a major role in these crashes. While these fatalities are devastating, they are fully preventable.

  • Plan a safe way home before the fun begins; ̧ Before drinking, designate a sober driver.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 9-1-1 and report their location immediately.
  • Wear safety belts – every trip, every seat location, every time – it’s the best defense against a drunk driver.

Finally, remember – Buzzed Driving IS Drunk Driving.
