Memorial Day Traffic Enforcement

The Downers Grove Police Department is participating in a year-long initiative that focuses on impaired driving and seat belt enforcement on specific holidays, including Memorial Day.
This initiative is in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and is funded with an IDOT traffic grant totaling $21,000.00. As part of the Downers Grove Police
Department's Memorial Day holiday emphasis, officers will be working saturation patrols that target impaired drivers and seat belt enforcement zones.

Here are some important facts to remember this Memorial Day holiday:

  • In an attempt to save lives and reduce injuries during the holiday, from May 19 through June 1, state and local law enforcement agencies across the country, including the Downers Grove Police Department, will be focusing on seat belt enforcement.
  • In 2012, seat belts saved an estimated 12,174 lives; an additional 3,031 lives could have been saved if the occupants of vehicles involved in fatal crashes had been buckled up.
  • Young people are dying at a disproportionate rate because they are not buckling up; 62% of 18 to 34 year olds killed in car crashes were not wearing their seat belt.

The best defense against an impaired driver is a safety belt. Buckle up, every trip, every time..
