State to Allow Concealed Carry in 2014

The Firearm Concealed Carry Act became law on July 9, 2013. The law allows approved licensees to carry concealed or mostly concealed handgun(s) in many public places. Applications for concealed carry licenses will be available on January 5, 2014, with the first licenses being issued no later than April 4, 2014.

According to the law, prohibited concealed carry areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Schools/Childcare Facilities
  • Local Government Buildings
  • Public Parks and Playgrounds
  • Public Libraries
  • Hospitals
  • Public Transportation
  • Events on Public Property that Require a Permit from the Village

All prohibited areas, including the ones listed above, are required to post state approved signage, clearly and conspicuously at all entrances. If you are in a prohibited area and have a reasonable suspicion that someone is carrying a firearm, concealed or not, dial 9-1-1 and report it to the police.

Residents should be aware that in the coming weeks signs identical to the one pictured will be posted in all Village buildings, schools and Park District facilities, advising that firearms are prohibited. Private businesses may also prohibit the carrying of concealed firearms, if they wish, by posting the signage at all entrances to their business.

Public gatherings or special events conducted on property open to the public that require a permit from the Village are designated as prohibited areas under the law. This includes block parties and races that take place in the Village. Village staff will provide the proper signage and posting instructions to event organizers.
