2013 Recycling Extravaganza Wrap-Up

The 2013 Recycling Extravaganza was a huge success, diverting more than 92,000 pounds of used goods from area landfills. Over one thousand residents were able to 
conveniently dispose of their items at a single location during the five-hour event which occurred on September 28.

The Village and Park District would like to thank all the volunteers, residents and sponsors who helped out at this year's event. Here are totals of the various categories 
of items collected, as reported by the company or non-for-profit organization that took responsibility for their recycling or safe disposal:

  • Carpet - 12-14,000 lbs (melted down for plastic) - Go Green Recycling
  • Paper - 7980 lbs - (all shredded that evening, returned to pulp, and recycled) - Cutting Edge
  • Ink Jet Cartridges - 895 - Scarce
  • Cell Phones - 189 - Scarce
  • Eye Glasses - 140 - Lions Club
  • Electronics - 59,038 lbs - Creative Recycling
  • Flags - 105 - VFW 503
  • Bikes - 80 - Working Bikes
  • Fire Extinguishers - 74 - Cintas
  • Propane Tanks - 52 - Amerigas
  • Lead-Acid Batteries - 4,500 lbs - Interstate Batteries
  • Textiles, furniture, appliances - 3,940 lbs. - Goodwill
  • Home-building materials and tools - 2,000 lbs. - Habitat for Humanity Restore

Total - More than 92,000 lbs. diverted from landfills

We'd like to thank the students and faculty of WDGC, 88.3 FM, the student radio station operated by District 99, for broadcasting live from the event.
