Why You're Paying LESS In Village Property Taxes This Year

For the second year in a row, property owners in Downers Grove benefit from a reduction in taxes paid to the Village on their 2012 Property Tax bills (collected in 2013). In the EXAMPLE, which is an actual tax bill, this property owner paid $108.32 less in property taxes to the Village in 2012 vs. 2011.

Taxes levied by the Village on the 2012 Property Tax bill are nearly $2.0 million less than in 2011- a reduction of 15.2%. The reduction is due to the January 2013 implementation of the Stormwater Utility, a fee based system used to fund the operating costs of the Village's stormwater system. Prior to this change, the stormwater system was primarily funded through property taxes.

Understanding Your Tax Bill

Property taxes are assessed by many taxing bodies, as shown by the various line items on the tax bill. Taxes levied by the Village are represented by the following three line items: (outlined in red on the EXAMPLE, which is an actual tax bill.)

  • VLG DWNRS GR -EX FIRE
  • PENSION FUND
  • VLG DWNRS GR FIRE

The Village portion of the property tax is less than 10% of the total tax bill.  NOTE:  The public library identified on the bill as VLG DWNRS GR LIBR sets its own tax levy.

Calculate Your Reduction

  • In the Tax 2011 column, add the values of the three Village line items for a total;
  • In the Tax 2012 column, add the values of the three Village line items for a total;
  • Subtract the 2012 total from  the 2011 total: The difference represents the reduction in property taxes paid to the Village.
