On Friday, March 22, 2013, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the Downers Grove Police Department responded to the area of 6500 Fairview Avenue in reference to an individual who was possibly in possession of an old military mortar round.
The individual was holding a garage sale and was advised by a patron that the device could possibly be a live explosive. The individual was enroute to the Downers Grove Police Department to have the device evaluated and disposed of. Officers located the device within the individual's vehicle and were able to confirm that it appeared to be a mortar shell.
Due to the volatility and uncertainty of such a device, the DuPage County Sheriff's Bomb Squad was contacted and the area was cordoned off. The mortar was removed from the vehicle and subsequently destroyed by the bomb squad. It was determined that the device was not a live explosive.
This process resulted in a loud noise that could be heard throughout the area. Area residents were notified of this incident and every precaution was taken to insure the safety of the public.
