UPDATE: March 22, 2013 On March 19, 2013 at approximately 9:49 A.M. the Downers Grove Police Department responded to a report of a person that was struck by a train at the Forest Avenue BNSF railroad crossing. The victim was struck by an eastbound Metra commuter train.
The man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has been identified as 21 year old David Conrad, Jr. from Downers Grove. The accident is classified as a death investigation and is still ongoing. Preliminary information suggests Mr. Conrad may have intentionally placed himself in the path of the oncoming train. The DuPage County coroner will make the final determination of the cause of death.
UPDATE: 12:02 p.m. All BNSF crossings in Downers Grove are now open.
Press Release 11:35 a.m. Pedestrian Struck by Train
On March 19, 2013 at approximately 9:49 A.M. the Downers Grove Police Department responded to a report of a subject that was struck by a train at the Forest Avenue BNSF railroad crossing. The preliminary investigation indicates that a man walked around the crossing gates while a Metra commuter train was traveling east of Main Street on track #3, the southern most tracks. The victim was struck by an eastbound Metra commuter train. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses stated that the crossing gates were down and functioning at the time.
The accident investigation is ongoing and the police department is not releasing the victim's name, pending formal notification of family members.
UPDATE 10:55 a.m.: Police have confirmed that the pedestrian incident was a fatality.
Downers Grove Police are responding to a pedestrian incident at Forest/Main. Trains are stopped and the crossing will remain closed as the investigation continues. Motorists area asked to avoid the area and use the crossings at Washington Street or Belmont Road.
