July 4 Traffic Enforcement Campaign

The Downers Grove Police Department is participating in a year-long initiative that focuses on impaired driving and seat belt enforcement on specific holidays, including the Fourth of July.  As part of the Downers Grove Police Department's holiday emphasis, officers will be working saturation patrols that target impaired drivers and seat belt enforcement zones. This initiative is in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and is funded with an IDOT traffic grant totaling $33,000.00.

While celebrating during the holiday, please use caution when you are on the road. July 4 is one of the deadliest times for traffic crashes due to a rise in impaired driving. During the 2010 Fourth of July period, 392 people were killed in traffic crashes. Of those fatalities, 39% involved a drunk driver. While these fatalities are devastating, they are fully preventable by having a plan:

  • Plan a safe way home before the fun begins
  • Before drinking, designate a sober drive.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 9-1-1 and report their location immediately.
  • Wear safety belts - every trip, every seat location, every time - it's the best defense against a drunk driver.

Remember , Buzzed Driving IS Drunk Driving.
