Accidents are no picnic. Neither is drunk driving. Over the Memorial Day holiday, the Downers Grove Police Department will conduct seat belt enforcement zones and DUI saturation patrols. These activities are part of a year-long initiative funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) that focuses on impaired driving and seat belt enforcement on specific holidays, including Memorial Day. During this initiative, law enforcement will be out in force both day and night.
- During the 2011 Memorial Day holiday weekend, 13 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes; six of those deaths involved alcohol.
- Late-night hours are the most dangerous; it is when the highest numbers of motorists die in alcohol-related crashes. During late-night hours, seat belt usage is also at a low.
- The best defense against an impaired driver is a safety belt. Remember, Illinois law states that all passengers in a motor vehicle must buckle up.
- If you drink, designate a sober driver - so everyone gets home safely.
The Downers Grove Police Department is working hard to keep impaired drivers off our roads. Please do your part and make good choices that keep you and your loved ones safe.
