Holiday Traffic Initiatives Underway

The Downers Grove Police Department is participating in the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. This initiative is in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and funded by an IDOT traffic grant totaling $33,000.00.

Officers will target impaired driving offenses, as well as seat belt violations, during the period of December 19, 2011 through January 1, 2012.

The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" mobilization takes place during major holidays when statistics indicate there is a higher rate of fatalities associated with impaired driving. Impaired driving is a violent crime that kills. Every 30 minutes someone dies because of an impaired driver; every two minutes someone is injured.

"Driving Under the Influence" or DUI is defined as operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, other drugs or intoxicating compounds and methamphetamine. In Illinois, a driver is legally considered to be under the influence if he/she has a blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or more. In certain situations, a driver may have a BAC of less than .08 and be arrested and convicted of DUI. The following DUI "facts" demonstrate the importance of education coupled with consistent aggressive enforcement.

  • In 2009, there were 10,839 alcohol-related traffic fatalities nationally.
  • During that same time frame in Illinois, there were 309 alcohol-related traffic fatalities on our roadways.
  • Police officers in Illinois made more than 45,900 DUI arrests in 2009.
  • At .08 BAC, a driver is three times more likely to be involved in a car crash than a sober driver, and eleven times more likely to be killed in a single-vehicle crash.

The Downers Grove Police Department will be working hard to keep impaired drivers off our roads. Please do your part and make good choices that keep you and your loved ones safe and remember to always buckle-up - every trip, every time.
