Traffic Initiatives Begin with Thanksgiving Holiday

The Downers Grove Police Department, in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), will focus on two critical traffic related issues over the next year; impaired driving and seat belt enforcement. These initiatives are being funded by a $33,000 grant from IDOT, which must be used specifically to cover manpower hours for holiday traffic enforcement campaigns.

The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Click-it or Ticket" campaigns will commence with the Thanksgiving holiday, November 14-27, 2011. Officers will conduct seat belt enforcement zones during both daytime and nighttime hours. In addition, officers will conduct DUI saturation patrols during this initiative.

The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" impaired driving mobilization takes place during major holidays when statistics indicate there is a higher rate of fatalities associated with impaired driving. Impaired driving is a violent crime that kills. Every 30 minutes someone dies because of an impaired driver; every two minutes someone is injured.

The focus of "Click-it or Ticket" is to get everyone to buckle up on every trip, every time. The best defense against impaired drivers is to buckle-up.

The Downers Grove Police Department will be working hard to keep impaired drivers off our roads. Please do your part and make good choices that keep you and your loved ones safe.
