July 4th Safety/Events

Did you know that fireworks are illegal in Downers Grove and in Illinois? The Downers Grove Municipal Code mirrors that of the Illinois State Fireworks Code, which means that firecrackers, bottle rockets, cherry bombs and the like are prohibited. Though one can easily purchase fireworks legally in adjacent states, it is illegal to bring them home across the border.

Legal firework novelties such as sparklers, fountains, snakes, party poppers and ground spinners, marketed as "safe," still possess dangers. For instance, sparklers reach temperatures of 1,200 to 1,800 degrees, throwing off sparks that can cause mild to severe burns, yet adults commonly allow children to handle them.

About one quarter of emergency room fireworks injuries occur from July 2 to July 5, but no one believes they will get hurt because they are careful. In 2007, sparklers and other novelties accounted for one-third of emergency room fireworks injures. For a July 4th that's both exciting and safe, leave the fireworks to the experts and take the family to a professional outdoor display.

The Villages of Downers Grove and Woodridge will present a fireworks display on July 4, 2011 at 75th/Lemont at the Zigfield Troy Golf Course. Fireworks begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.  There are several parking lots in the area to park and enjoy the show.

The parade will be on July 4, 2011 and will begin at Main St. & Warren Ave. at 12:45 p.m.  The procession heads north on Main St. to Downers Grove North High Shcool.  Arrive early to find a viewing location.  The parade features floats, civic organizations, marching bands and a special section of pets and their owners.
