Passport to Safety Day is an annual event hosted by the Village of Downers Grove Fire and Police Departments, in cooperation with the Downers Grove Park District and several other agencies. Approximately three hundred children participated in the event this year, intended to educate young children and their parents about the ways to stay safe and prevent injuries.
Unintentional injuries are often referred to by the public as accidents, but most of them are preventable, especially for children. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provides data that the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 14 year olds is unintentional injuries which include choking, suffocation, fire, burns, and drowning. Activity stations at the Passport to Safety Day teach children and parents about these dangers and how to prevent them in a fun atmosphere that is interactive.
