Saving the Environment, One Item at a Time

The Village of Downers Grove and the Downers Grove Park District hosted another successful Recycling Extravaganza on Saturday, September 11, 2010.  The event, which was first held in 2008, is designed to divert toxic and reusable goods from landfills by providing residents with an outlet to dispose of things like old lead/alkaline batteries, tvs and other electronics. There were over 40 community volunteers working throughout the event to ensure that cars were safely unloaded and all material was deposited at the proper location.  This event would not be possible without the help of these dedicated green-minded individuals.

Recyclable material was collected from 1800 cars over the course of six hours.  Once again, used electronics comprised the bulk of overall items collected.  Creative Recycling reported that 109,655 pounds of electronics were collected.  Although 32,000 pounds shy of the electronics collected last year, more people actually participated in this year’s event.

The list below reflects the totals for the various categories of items collected as reported by the company or non-for-profit organization that has assumed responsibility for their safe recycling or disposal:

  • 159 American flags (Century Post 503, Veterans of Foreign Wars
  •  7 cribs, 4 dressers, 5 crib mattresses and 1 changing table, (Sharing Connections)
  • 157 lead acid batteries (Exide Technologies
  • 128 fire extinguishers (TriState Fire Extinguishers)
  • 20,000 lbs of paper (Cintas Document Management)

Special thanks to the following organizations/agencies for their participation: Creative Recycling, DuPage County, Sharing Connections Furniture Bank, Exide Technologies, Cintas Document Management, Downers Grove Noon Lions Club, SCARCE, Century Post 503 Veterans of Foreign Wars,  and TriState Fire Extinguishers.  The organizers also wish to thank Dunkin Donuts, Trader Joe’s and Celebrity Sandwiches for donating food and beverages to the event.   .
