The Downers Grove Police Department has been named by the 2009/2010 National Law Enforcement Challenge as the Top Municipal Agency in Traffic Safety in the category of agencies with 76-100 sworn officers. Sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the challenge is a friendly competition with other police agencies of similar size and awards recognition to agencies with the best overall traffic safety program in the United States.
The competition requires the agencies to report their policies and procedures covering highway safety, their officer training, public information and education initiatives, as well as enforcement and effectiveness measures.
Chief Robert Porter said, “I am extremely proud of the entire department for their efforts and our record on traffic safety. Keeping our streets safe for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists is a high priority.”
In addition to this national recognition, Downers Grove was named the top agency in Illinois for pedestrian and bike safety in the 2009/2010 Illinois Traffic Challenge, a distinction they also earned in 2007.
