UPDATE - High Volume Closes Shredding Event Early

11:00 am Saturday, April 17- Saturday’s free paper shredding event sponsored by the Village and Brink’s Document Destruction was a resounding success. The enormous volume of material collected quickly filled the two large trucks on hand and resulted in early closure of the event.

The paper shredding event, which is designed to reduce the risk of identity theft, was scheduled from 8:00 a.m. until noon, however, by 10:15 a.m. both trucks were filled to maximum capacity.

“We are very pleased with the success of this event and to be able to provide residents with an opportunity to safely dispose of personnel documents – we collected double the amount of material over last year in less than half the time,” stated Police Chief Robert Porter.

During last year's event, one truck was filled over a four hour period. Organizers from the Village and Brinks, which donates the trucks, decided to have a second truck available this year. Each truck is about ¾ length of a semi-truck.

Shredding Event

The Downers Grove Police Department, in partnership with Brinks Document Destruction, will be hosting a Paper-Shredding Event on Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. until Noon at the Police Department, 825 Burlington Ave. This free service is being offered to Downers Grove residents in an effort to prevent identity theft. Participants must show proof of Downers Grove residency.

Each person will be allowed three brown paper bags or three banker’s boxes filled with personal paperwork. A bonded and insured representative of Brinks Document Destruction will use a crosscut shredder to render documents beyond reconstruction. Shredded materials will be taken to a recycling facility.

Identity theft is a serious crime. Thieves often look through unsuspecting victims’ trash in search of discarded documents containing your name, address or phone number, as well other personal information such as Social Security, bank account or credit card numbers. People whose identities have been stolen can spend months or years trying to clear their names and restore their credit record.

One of the most important things you can do is to shred any personal documents you wish to discard. Please mark your calendar and take advantage of this free service.
