Village Receives Historic Preservation Nod

The Village has received confirmation from the National Park Service that it is now a Certified Local Government (CLG) with regard to historic preservation.

As a Certified Local Government, Downers Grove and its residents can now participate as a partner in state and federal preservation activities including the following:

  • Eligibility to receive matching grant funds to assist in the implementation of preservation programs
  • Review of National Register of Historic Places nominations
  • Resident eligibility in the Property Tax Assessment Freeze program
  • Technical assistance from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA)

Over the past several years, the Village has been working to enhance historic preservation efforts. In 2007, the Village Council adopted the Historic Preservation Ordinance and in 2009 the Historic Preservation Plan was adopted with the goal of becoming a CLG through the State of Illinois program.

Applications for designation as a historic building or place are available at Village Hall. Questions about the program should be directed to Jeff O’Brien, Planning Manager
