Main St. from Maple Ave. to 55th St. will be closed to traffic until approximately 8:00 p.m this evening due to a ruptured gas main in the vicinity of Main St. and Summit, which occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. this afternoon.
4:00 p.m. Nicor crews have exposed the leaking pipe and are working on capping off the ruptured pipe on both the east and west sides of Main Street. Work time is still estimated to be an additional two hours or more. Fire crews are standing by until all hazardous conditions are eliminated. Residents evacuated will be able to return to their homes this evening with full power and gas service. The actions being taken by Nicor at this time are temporary in nature and a permanent replacement of the leaking pipe will take place later within the next week.
2:23 p.m. Emergency crews are on the scene and homes closest to the leak have been evacuated. Nicor is on the scene and is awaiting more equipment and personnel to repair the leak. Com Ed is also on the scene assisting emergency crews in eliminating ignition sources.
People in the vicinity may detect an odor of natural gas until the repair is completed.
