The Downers Grove Police Department has been receiving a significant number of reports involving portable GPS units being taken from motor vehicles. In many of these cases, a vehicle window was broken in order to obtain the unit. It is recommended that you remove not only the GPS unit when you park your vehicle, but the entire mounting bracket, also. It’s not enough to keep the GPS unit out of sight. If a bracket is visible, a thief may think the GPS unit is hidden in the vehicle.
The Downers Grove Police Department strongly recommends that you do not keep any valuables in your vehicle and to remember to always lock it when you leave. If you do have a GPS unit, be sure to record the serial number and keep it at home for safekeeping. This will assist officers in returning it to you if it is recovered.
