The Downers Grove Village Council approved a three-year agreement with Blackboard Connect, Inc. at their February 3 meeting for the services of a community-wide notification system. The services will be paid for with money awarded to the Village from the PrimeCo settlement.
The selected product, Connect-CTY, has the ability to reach all Downers Grove residences and businesses with a pre-recorded message within 5 to 10 minutes of activation. The primary form of notification will be by phone, however residents and businesses will have the opportunity to register additional devices on which to be notified and may edit their account information at any time.
The community-wide notification system can be used to alert the entire Village about an issue or a specific group or area may be targeted. For instance, it might only be necessary to alert residents of a temporary water shut off within a 2 block radius of a water main break, but not the entire Village. The Village expects that the system will be in use by May 1.
The PrimeCo settlement was the result of a class-action lawsuit regarding impact fees charged to wireless customers. Under the terms of the settlement, the money awarded is to be used to fund emergency telecommunications programs; enhance or obtain equipment, technology or infrastructure, or the enhancement of emergency care.
