Police warn of online scam

The Downers Grove Police Department has been alerted to a new online “phishing” scam. Phishing is the act of sending an e-mail to a user and falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. The e-mail directs the user to visit a website where they are asked to update or provide personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers, social security number or bank account numbers.

This latest notice purports to be from the Internal Revenue Service and advises the recipient that they are eligible for a “stimulus payment.” The recipient is instructed to submit the “Economic Stimulus Online Form” and links the recipient to another website to access the form. Per the IRS , this is a scam to obtain personal information from the recipient.

Please use caution when providing any personal information. Never use a “link” to get to any site asking for personal information. If you have any questions, please contact the Downers Grove Police Department Crime Prevention Unit at (630) 434-5606.
