The purpose of the project is to thoroughly study traffic issues in the neighborhood bounded by Main Street, Fairview Avenue, Maple Avenue and 55th Street. The goal is to alleviate issues caused by speeding, cut-though traffic, pedestrian/traffic conflicts and intersection controls.
A detailed study of the intersection at 55th and Washington Streets will also be undertaken as part of the project. This will involve a thorough investigation of conditions that may be contributing to vehicle accidents at this location and recommendations for mitigating those accidents.
The Village authorized contractor for the project is KLOA, Inc. of Rosemont, Il. Data collection and analysis will include temporary electronic traffic counters as well as manual pedestrian and vehicular counts at intersections. Roadway measurements, intersection layouts and parking data will also be examined.
4/20/11 Following the January 26, 2011 Public Meeting, staff conducted additional field checks, met with residents, and made adjustments to the proposed study recommendations. The 2010 Neighborhood Study (Study) was then presented to the Transportation and Parking (TAP) Commission on March 9, 2011. The TAP Commission voted unanimously to approve the study's short-term recommendations which consist of traffic control changes to STOP, YIELD locations and also to school crossing and pedestrian crossing locations within the study area.
The Study was formally presented to the Village Council on April 12, 2011 for initial discussion and dialogue and approved by the Council on April 19, 2011.
