S.A.L.T. Council
The Downers Grove Township Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.) Council is a consortium of local law enforcement, fire protection, governmental and community agencies, as well as senior citizens, with a shared goal of improving the quality of life and home safety of older persons in their homes and in the community. The following programs are offered by Downers Grove Township and the SALT Council:
- File of Life
A File of Life kit contains a standardized medical information card in a magnetic pouch to be placed on the front of a refrigerator. Emergency responders are trained to look for this information, which may enable them to deliver medical attention more quickly. The kits are available at Downers Grove Township, 4340 Prince St., and at the Downers Grove Police Department, 825 Burlington Ave. A $1 donation is requested.
- Home Inspection Team for Seniors (HITS)
This program provides senior citizens with a free inspection of their home by trained professionals representing police departments, fire departments and health agencies. Inspectors identify issues in the home that may increase the likelihood of an injury due to a fall or make the home susceptible to burglary or fire. Clients are provided with simple guidelines to improve home safety and security.

If mail accumulates or some other sign of distress comes to the attention of the letter carrier, they will contact the Police Department to conduct a well-being check.
