Recycling Extravaganza

The Village of Downers Grove and the Downers Grove Park District will host a Recycling Extravaganza on Saturday, September 28, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Village of Downers Grove Public Works Facility, 5101 Walnut Avenue. This event is open to residents of DuPage County and does not include businesses or not-for-profit organizations.

Toby Greene, event mascotVehicles must enter the Recycling Extravaganza site from Curtiss Street, via northbound Walnut Avenue or Belmont Road. Access from eastbound Curtiss Street and southbound Walnut Avenue will be restricted. Volunteers will direct traffic in the lot and assist customers dropping off their donations.

NOTE:  Vehicles must be in line by 1:00 p.m to be served. Vehicles arriving after 1:00 p.m. will be turned away. 


Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the Recycling Extravaganza, especially for the following reasons:

  • As of January 1, 2012: TVs, computers (and laptops), monitors, printers, computer peripherals, VCRs/DVD players, gaming systems, MP3 players and other electronic items will be banned from Illinois landfills. 
  • The current contract with Republic Services that went into effect on April 1, 2011, includes one Amnesty Day, which will occur on the week of September 30, 2013.

 Items Accepted  

  • Carpet and padding: Any size is acceptable but it must be dry. Wool carpeting is NOT accepted.

  • PAPER SHREDDING:  Limit of 2 brown paper grocery bags per vehicle. Paper will be collected and shredded off-site by a certified National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) document destruction company.

  • Lead acid batteries: automotive-size battery cores – car, boat, truck, motorcycle, computer, sump pump
  • Rechargable Household Batteries, only. Alkaline batteries will not be accepted. 
  • Electronics: Large and small electronics, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, cameras, computers, laptops, copiers, cords, discs, electric typewriters, fax/adding machines, hard drives, key boards, mice, monitors, PDAs, printers, scanners, small kitchen appliances, radios, speakers, stereos, telephones, zip drives, hair dryers, and more.
  • Cell phones and accessories 
  • Textiles and gently-used clothing
  • Propane tanks
  • Scrap Metal
  • Bicycles, in any condition
  • Ink cartridges
  • New and gently used building materials, tools, and appliances 
  • Furniture, in useable condition: dressers, tables, chairs, dishes and silverware. 
  • Musical instruments
  • Art supplies
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs, only. 
  • Eye Glasses
  • Hearing Aids
  • American Flags

  • Alkaline batteries
  • Refrigerators and large household appliances
  • Air conditioners and dehumidifiers
  • Smoke alarms
  • Incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
  • Thermostats
  • Paint of any kind
  • Household hazardous waste such as cleaning agents, chemicals

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are needed to ensure all aspects of the Recycling Extravaganza run smoothly. Morning and afternoon shifts are available. Activities include directing vehicles through the parking lot and sorting the goods received.
