Richard J. Kulovany was elected to the Village Council in April 2019. Prior to serving on the Council, Rich served on the Downers Grove Plan Commission from 2017 to 2019 and the Zoning Board of Appeals from 2015 to 2017. To better understand the issues in Downers Grove, he attended approximately 80% of the regular Village Council meetings from 2015 until his election, as well as the Long-Range Plan, Budget, stormwater and facilities workshops, and most of the Ad Hoc Committee meetings, including Historic Preservation and the Comprehensive Plan.
Rich demonstrates his passion for Downers Grove in the way he serves as a volunteer. He was elected as a Director of the Downers Grove Historical Society in 2018 and was named Treasurer in 2019. Rich has also been a Director of the Pierce Downer's Heritage Alliance since the end of 2018, a group dedicated to preserving the natural and historic heritage of Downers Grove. He was Chair of Friends of the Edwards House, a historic preservation group, from 2015-2017, where they won the prestigious Landmarks Illinois, Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award for "Project of the Year for Advocacy," the top award in the state.
With Rich growing up in Downers Grove, his roots run deep. His family moved into the home his father built when Rich was just ten months old. He and his two brothers Bob and Tom went to Whittier, O'Neill and Downers Grove South. Rich married his high school sweetheart, Kathleen Callahan from Woodridge, in 1972. They raised their three children in Downers Grove and now they have grandchildren who are also growing up in the Village. Some of his most heartwarming moments in life include attending his grandchildren's events in the same schools he attended.
Rich has extensive professional experience in the enterprise application software and services business. His leadership roles have included Vice President of Sales and Marketing positions both nationally and world-wide. He has traveled to all 50 states and 24 countries. His expertise includes conducting in-depth analysis of the current situation and then developing the plans and executing on those plans to ensure maximum revenue growth and increased customer satisfaction. Rich is seasoned in dealing with complex situations and in making difficult and important decisions. He attended College of DuPage and online at the W.P. Carey School of Business of Arizona State University, majoring in Business, while working full time.
Rich's priorities are to use his professional and volunteer experience to help make Downers Grove an even better place to dine, shop, live, work and open a business. He recognizes that the Village Council will need to make tough decisions as they navigate through this difficult period.
Rich and Kathy have three grown children; Jennifer (Kulovany) Ostrum, Mike, and Jim, and ten grandchildren. His hobbies include volunteer work for Downers Grove and spending time with his family.
