Commissioner Nicole Walus was appointed to the Village Council in August 2016. Nicole has helped to serve Downers Grove as a member of the Rotary Club of Downers Grove since 2014.
Nicole grew up in a service oriented environment. Her mother always stressed the importance of helping others and giving back and her father served the community she grew up in as a police officer and sergeant for over 30 years. Nicole graduated from Bradley University with a bachelor's degree in History Secondary Education and Music. She then went on to get her master's degree in Education Administration from Governor's State University in 2009. She then received endorsements in Special Education and English as a Second Language from University of St. Francis. She is currently finishing a Teaching and Learning master's degree from University of St. Francis which will be completed in August 2017.
She is in her tenth year of teaching at the high school level and in her sixth year as a cross-categorical special education teacher working with students who have learning disabilities and/or emotional disturbance.
Nicole and her husband Mark have been residents of Downers Grove since 2010 and live near Downers South High School with their two daughters. She enjoys spending time with her family, reading, volunteering, traveling, and running.
