Commissioner Bob Barnett was sworn in for his first term on May 5, 2009. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Evansville, Indiana and a Master of Business Administration from Keller Graduate School of Management.
Bob has a history of community service as evidenced by his current involvement in Downers Grove. He has served as the Downers Grove Township Republican Committeeman for the 8th Precinct since 2000. He was appointed to the Stormwater and Flood Plain Oversight Committee in 2008 and is the current Congregation President at Immanuel Lutheran Church, a position he has held since 2004. In addition, Bob enjoys being part of the YMCA ’s Indian Guides Program and coaching Downers Grove Youth Baseball.
Bob’s past service to the Village includes the Downers Grove Park District Outdoor Pool Advisory Committee from 2001-2002, the Grove Foundation from 2002-2006, and the Downers Grove Liquor Commission from 2002-2008, where he took a lead role in amending the Village’s Liquor Ordinance.
Professionally, Bob is head of production operations at BarnettBates Corporation, a family-owned manufacturing firm in Joliet, IL, that produces steel and aluminum bar grating, architectural fencing and gates, sun and sight control elements, and security grilles. Previously, Bob worked as a plant efficiency engineer at Commonwealth Edison’s Fisk generating station.
Bob and his wife Cary met at the University of Evansville in 1988, were married in 1995 and have lived in Downers Grove since 1998. They welcomed their first son, Bobby, in 2000, followed by Ana in 2003, and Will in 2006. Dogs Tucker and Casey keep everyone active. His hobbies include gardening, golf, and photography.
